What if yesterday's trash could help power tomorrow?

That's exactly what's happening at the Pine Grove Landfill in Columbus, Georgia, where a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility is transforming landfill gas into a valuable local energy resource. Through a partnership involving Liberty Utilities, the Columbus Consolidated Government, and a renewable energy developer, naturally occurring landfill gas is now being captured, cleaned, and injected into Liberty's natural gas system.

The project is a powerful example of environmental stewardship in action. The facility puts landfill gas to work, creating a renewable energy source that helps reduce emissions while supporting the community's long-term sustainability goals. According to project estimates, the environmental benefit is equivalent to removing more than 21,159,896 gallons of gasoline-related carbon dioxide emissions each year.

"At Liberty, our responsibility is to provide safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas to the customers and communities we serve, but we also believe in creating strong and meaningful collaborations within those same communities," said Carolyn Bermudez, President of Liberty Utilities Georgia. "This project is a prime example."

In addition to the environmental benefits, the renewable natural gas produced at Pine Grove is purchased at a lower cost than traditional pipeline-supplied gas, helping Liberty diversify its gas supply portfolio and put downward pressure on customer rates. It's a rare solution that supports affordability, reliability, and sustainability at the same time.

The success of the project demonstrates what can happen when local government and private industry work together toward a common goal. By turning a naturally occurring byproduct of landfill operations into a valuable energy resource, Columbus is finding new value in what was once considered waste.

For Liberty, that's what being a responsible steward is all about: investing in partnerships, supporting the communities we serve, and finding innovative ways to deliver energy for generations to come.
