AMR FAQ - Residential - Georgia Gas - Liberty

Advanced meters are coming to your neighborhood!

Beginning January of 2024, we will be installing an automated meter reading system (AMR) throughout our service area. This new technology is highly accurate, more efficient, and more convenient for many customers. Devices will be installed on meters that transmit the monthly reading by radio signal to Liberty trucks as they pass by. This will eliminate the need for manual reads and access to meters inside of homes to gain a monthly read.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • AMR is an acronym for automated meter reading, a technology that enables natural gas meters to be read remotely, without accessing a customer’s yard. Liberty's AMR system will use radio transmitting devices that are attached to the meter sets of existing natural gas customers. Readings from each meter will be collected once a month by a mobile meter reading device mounted to a vehicle, resulting in timely and accurate bills based on actual natural gas usage and virtually eliminating estimated bills.

  • As of today, Liberty performs manual meter readings each month, which involves our technicians physically reading customer meters. This process is antiquated and can result in customers receiving estimated bills if the meter is inaccessible. It also is inconvenient for many customers, as some gas meters are indoors which requires them to be home in order to allow us to read their meter.

  • An automated meter reading system means:

    • Easier access to hard-to-read meters
    • More convenient for customers, since no one will have to come into your property to read the meter
    • Reduced inaccurate reads
    • Reduced time-consuming rereads
    • Reduced carbon footprint from fewer vehicles on the road
  • No, a device called an ERT is attached to the existing meter. This device reads and transmits your monthly natural gas usage to our trucks as they drive by.

  • In most cases you will not have a disruption of service during installation.

  • Liberty will be updating every meter in our service territory. We anticipate that it will take about a year before our system is fully automated, which means we will be installing the device on your meter before the end of 2024. We will be providing updated timelines on our website throughout the year as we work through our service area.

  • In most cases, customers do not need to schedule the upgrade. Our technicians will be working through our service territory one neighborhood at a time. A few weeks before the installation occurs, you will receive a door hanger alerting you that we will be coming to work on your meter. The only time you may need to schedule an appointment is if your meter is inaccessible and we need to send a representative back to install the device at a time that is convenient for you.

From start to finish, the installation of the ERT will take approximately _ minutes.

  • Liberty will be partnering with Tru-Check, a Utility Metering Solutions company. All Tru-Check technicians will have proper identification and will have a Liberty decal on their company vehicles denoting they are an authorized partner of Liberty.
